Here at Human and Hope, we love to share the stories of some of our students and how their lives have changed because of the wonderful staff at Human and Hope Association (HHA) Cambodia. And today, we’d like to share with you the story of *Chann.
Meet Chann, a six-year-old student at HHA Cambodia. Chann used to attend class wearing soiled clothes and no shoes. His whole body was consistently covered with dirt, and his body odour distracted the other students. Needless to say, he lived in extreme poverty.
When the staff at HHA Cambodia asked about his hygiene, Chann told them that he often didn’t take a bath, and he never washed his hands before eating.
HHA Cambodia’s staff then spent time with Chann’s mother to explained to her the impacts of bad hygiene on Chann’s health. Additionally, they encouraged her to ensure that Chann took a bath every day, and requested her to save some money to buy him shoes.
Thankfully, Chann’s hygiene habits started to change with his regular participation in HHA Cambodia’s hygiene workshops, as well as the continuous support from his mother. This brave and curious child began showering every day, washing his hands, brushing his teeth and wearing clean clothes. For the first time in his life, Chann has his own toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and shampoo.
“I always wash my hands when my hands are dirty, especially after play, when I come out from [the] bathroom, and before eating,” – Chann
